USB bridge cable software for easy file transfer without networking |
|
I say: A few years ago I bought a cable designed to link 2 PCs using USB. It was cheap, simple and worked well, even under Win98 - and apart from the odd crash and failure to connect it continues to work with XP and between different flavors of Windows. I bought a couple more... But the software that it runs on, which was on a floppy, is almost impossible to find on the web - but it IS out there!
Checking the file properties reveals it to be made by 'Prolific Technology Inc' a Taiwanese company whose website - http://www.prolific.com.tw/ - is currently undergoing a major overhaul and may not always be available, but buried within their support pages, you can find Software and Drivers, User Manual, Datasheet and even a Reference Design Guide, but for some reason these are all listed under the name 'PL-2301 USB to USB Bridge Controller (EOL)'.
Just be brave and follow the link for 'PL-2301 Software and Drivers', and only then do they let on that you've found what you're lookiong for - PL-2301 Windows Driver for 98, ME, 2K, XP (PC-Linq v1.6.4.2). The version of PC-Linq (or PL-2301 or whatever) which they have is newer than the last PC-Linq version (1.6.3) so I'd recommend getting it from them. If their site goes down again then the older version may still be available via the alternative link.
The cables are also still available from many outlets - try googling "usb data transfer cable" - and shop around, the prices vary wildly from as little as £7 to over £20.

FIFTY FREEWARE FAVOURITES - A GENERAL NOTE
Please Don't Contact Me...
About any app NO LONGER in my 50 Favourites... I simply don't want to know...
For help... Please don't contact ME for help using any program. I only recommend it, I don't (and can't) offer a free support service for every program I recommend.
What you can do for yourself is...if you have any problems with anything I've recommended, contact the author of the program, or Google it.
Re: broken links... Links change. I have stated above the date on which I last checked the links. When I next update this section I'll check all the links again. So please don't contact me if the links don't work - I'll find out eventually.
What you can do for yourself is... if the links I give are broken, try searching for the program using Google or FileMirrors - that's what I'd do!
Re: it's not freeware! All of the programs I recommend in this section are 'free' in the sense that they were at one time distributed as fully functional software with no payment required for their continued use. However... some software companies withdraw their freeware, or offer programs as freeware for a short period before 'upgrading' them to shareware. So please don't contact ME to say any program I recommend is no longer freeware. I'll find out when I next update.
What you can do for yourself is... search the net... As I understand it, if you can find the original freeware distribution, and it still works, there's nothing to prevent you from legitimately using it. You could try the Last Freeware Version or OldVersion.com.
